Militants may resurface after civilian strife loses teeth
8/12/2010 10:06:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 12: Recent inputs from the intelligence agencies have revealed that militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, have received fresh inst ructions to re-launch armed attacks in different parts of the state in order to enhance the level of uncertainty in the security and political sectors.
Official sources said that as per these inputs agencies across the border have brought additional groups of militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, on the launching pads across Poonch, Rajouri, R S Pura, Akhnoor, Suchetgrah, Kupwara, Keran, Tangdhar, Karnah for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir.
According to these sources, those militants, who had crossed into Jammu and Kashmir in recent days, had been directed to lie low and wait for the results of civilian strife in the Kashmir valley.
The sources said soon after the agencies across the LOC realised that the heat of the civilian strife in Kashmir had started getting dimmer, militants including those who had crossed into the state recently, have been told to launch armed at tacks on the security pickets and Army convoys besides on the houses of political leaders in order to ensure that the level of unrest and violence further peaked.
In support of their contention the sources referred to two militant attacks on the Army convoy in Thanamandi in Rajouri and at the house of a political leader in Sopore on Wednesday in which three policemen and one woman were killed and four Army jawans were injured.
Sources said that majority of the infiltrators belonged to the dreaded Lashkar-i-Toiba terrorist outfit. They said the security forces deployed within the state and the troops guarding the border had been directed to further strengthen their counter insurgency operations which were needed for preventing militants from taking the upper hand.
It is believed that militant activities and attacks were likely to increase after the agencies across the border realised that gradually the level of intifada (peoples' resistence movement) in the Kashmir valley had started getting diluted.
Another reason for militants to kick up trouble was their belief that since bulk of the police and para military forces had been engaged in dealing with the protest rallies they (militants) could attack the soft targets at their sweet will.
There are fears that the level of militancy related violence could rise in the Jammu region after several companies of police and paramilitary forces were shifted to Srinagar for dealing with the protest r allies.
Reports said that in case the security scenario deteriorated in the Jammu region the state Government may redeploy those very companies of police and paramilitary forces that were shifted to the Kashmir valley.
