Kashmir won’t go anywhere: Farooq
8/12/2010 10:18:11 PM
AGENCIES
Bhopal, Aug 12: Union minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today expressed hope that the situation in Kashmir will improve and normalcy would be restored soon in the bruised valley.
"Kashmir won't go anywhere. The situation was worse in 1989 than what it is now. But things changed and normalcy returned to the valley. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent peace steps will improve the situation there," the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister told reporters here after inaugurating a solar energy system in Van Vihar Zoo.
Asked whether a sense of anger and alienation in Kashmir triggered off violence and unrest in the valley, Abdullah said there were many reasons for it.
"There are many factors. Some agencies want to destabilise the government in Kashmir and others want to secede from India," he said.
The Valley was rocked by violence following the death of a teenager on June 11 after allegedly being hit by a teargas shell at Gani stadium near Rajouri Kadal. After that street protests continued in the Valley which claimed 52 lives.
On the issue of 1984 Bhopal disaster, Abdullah said priority should be given to relief for gas victims over the exit of former Union Carbide Chief Warren Anderson.
"The tragedy victims are still writhing in pain and there is a need to provide help and relief to them now. Then Anderson's matter should be dealt with," he told reporters when asked to comment on Arjun Singh's statement yesterday.
Singh, breaking his silence had pointed fingers at late P V Narsimha Rao in the exit of Anderson in the wake of Bhopal gas tragedy thereby giving a clean chit to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Earlier, Abdullah said he met Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and expressed his desire to light up the defunct Union Carbide with solar energy.
"The CM looked positive," he said.
Abdullah said efforts were underway to generate 1000 mw solar energy in next three years.
