It’s not BJP, it’s spokesperson of PM & NC | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 12: Something is fundamentally wrong with the J&K unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The manner in which its leadership is conducting itself indicates that it has lost its moorings. The fact of the matter is that it has lost its very identity. It would be only appropriate to say that the BJP leadership in the state has become the official spokesperson of the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Prime Minister. The BJP-watchers say that the BJP leadership is confused, directionless and issueless; that the BJP leadership is ambivalent; and that it is just not able to decide what kind of role it should play in the troubled-state. So much so, the rivals of the BJP in Jammu province have been jeering and laughing at the BJP leadership. They have dismissed the BJP as the “C-team of the NC.” The situation has reached a point where the keen BJP-watchers are left with no other option but to say that the BJP has become utterly irrelevant in the state politics and that it’s only role today is to defend and bail out the troubled NC and clarify on behalf of the Prime Minister. One cannot but agree with the keen BJP-watchers. The political conduct of the state BJP leadership has left the people guessing. The people are just not able to understand what the BJP stands for and what it has been doing. The BJP leadership has indeed failed to clarify its position and stand on the present situation in Kashmir, on the NC-Congress coalition government and on the Jammu problem. The BJP leadership one day says that it would reject the Prime Minister’s invite on a spurious plea and the very next day it would take a complete U-turn and air-dash to Delhi to attend the meeting. And, on their return to Jammu, they would hold a press conference only to speak on behalf of the ruling NC and the Prime Minister. They would say the Prime Minister didn’t talk about autonomy; there was no reference to autonomy. They would attack and condemn media and assert “Prime Minister spoke nothing on autonomy, which is being wrongly projected in media.” In other words, they would take to task the people of Jammu province for the reason that they have expressed reservations on the autonomy issue; for the reason that they have opposed autonomy when no one discussed autonomy in the all-party meeting. They would even go to the extent of bailing out the NC president and the Union Minister, asserting “Farooq (Abdullah) raised the autonomy issue and presented it as the most viable solution to the present turmoil in the state which was not considered in all-party meeting. Even Farooq has said that if someone proposes another better option than Autonomy, he would withdraw his proposal." "We don't know who gave the statement in media about Prime Minister's remark on Autonomy but there was no consensus and discussion on Autonomy and even no one raised the issue in All Party Meet except Union Minister Farooq Abdullah," they would say in Jammu. The BJP leaders would say one day that what has been happening in Kashmir is a law and order problem and it should be dealt with as such and on the very next day they would endorse the view of the NC and the Prime Minister and shamelessly say that it is a political problem. They would go to the extent of saying that “a political solution is the key to the problem in Kashmir.” They would also pin their faith in the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister and say: "It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to find amicable solution to this problem". The BJP leaders would say on one day that the Congress must withdraw support to the NC-led government knowing it full well that the withdrawal of the support would automatically mean dissolution of the assembly, imposition of the Governor’s Rule and fresh elections and the very next day in the all-party meeting, they would oppose the Panthers Party’s demanding seeking imposition of the Governor Rule. They would oppose the demand because they believe that the BJP would be wiped out in case elections are held today. There is no doubt whatever that the BJP would not win even two seats in case elections are held today. The people are so fed up with this party. The BJP is a national party. It should refrain from behaving in the fashion it has been behaving and becoming a laughing stock and an object of contempt and ridicule. The party leadership must sit up without losing a single moment, retrospect and decide as to what role it should play in J&K as a national party taking into consideration the long-term national interests and the paramount interests of the non-Muslim minorities in the state. Not to retrospect or to continue to pursue the line it has been pursuing would be only to lose its political space to the Panthers Party, which is fighting for the reorganization of the state in its own way. Last but not the least, the BJP must remember that the people of Jammu and Ladakh and the religious and ethnic minorities in the state, including the Kashmiri Hindus and Sikhs, hate the NC and the politics – NC style.
