The Refugee United Front (RUF) has given a call for Jammu Bandh on Novemeber 6, conciding with opening of Civil Secretariat to protest against the successive state and central govt. apathy towards the plight of refugee community.
The front is a conglomerate of various refugee organizations including SOS International West Pakistan Refugee Action Comitee, Shehri Refugee Committee and Camps Refugee Committee.
Speaking at a press conference president of the Front said Raju Chuni said that refugees who migrated from Pakistan and POK during 1947 and those who were displaced in 1965,1971 and militancy affected persons of Jammu province, have been left at the mercy of God by successive governments. Except for lip service, central and state governments have done nothing for alleviating the sufferings of refugee community, alleged Chuni.
He said that before shifting of Darbar from Jammu to Srinagar, chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad had assured a delegation of refugee community that he would convene an all party meet to discuss the problems of refugees. The chief minister has admitted that the issue of refugees is pending the since long and needs a final settlement, but the chief minister has not found time to discuss the problems of the refugees.
He said, that during 1947, lakhs of refugees poured into J&K state from West Pakistan, Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Kotli, Bhimber, Poonch and Deva-Watala after surviving the onslaught by Pak murders with the hope that they would be received sympathically in their motherland. But even after losing their kith and kin, mothers, sisters, properties and valuable during the tribal raid, the refugees were not given any help.
The refugees are still languishing in a deplorable position in camps, temporary settlements without any proper rehabilitation for last 60 years.
