Govt accused of reviving Ikhwaan to quell protests | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 14: After having failed to curb the on-going protests, the government has been accused of resorting to overt and covert means to silence the defiant people. The Ikhwanies (pro-government gunmen) are on prowl once again- this time in Hazratbal area of Srinagar city. Earlier they were spotted in Anantnag town on July 13. According to a local news agency, a dreaded Ikhwani forced entry into a residential house on the outskirts of Hazratbal area of Srinagar city a few days ago. The inmates were thrashed and the house was ransacked. The incident sent shock waves across the city. While the motive behind the attack could not be established, the people see government hand behind the attack. "They have done it in Anantnag and they want to do it here. But we assure them a good fight", said a defiant Yasar. The Ikhwaan, basically a counter-insurgency force was created in 1995 to fight militancy. The `covert' operation yielded results and militancy was almost wiped out. But, the militants struck back in a big way in the post 1996 era and eliminated top commanders of the outfit including the father of counter insurgency, Kuka Parray, Fayaz Nabdi and others. Today the situation is totally different. Then it was Ikhwanies fighting the militants. Today it will be Ikhwanies fighting the defiant people. "The biggest army when pitted against the people fails", believes Yasar. However, in Anantnag they still call the shots. The Ikhwanies could be seen roaming in the interior localities of Anantnag town and its peripheries. Reports said the Ikhwaan men appear in the localities as soon as the police and the para-military forces leave the area. They pelt stones on the houses, smash window panes and rough up people who find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time, reports said. While the Srinagar attack has, by and large, been ignored, the revival of Ikhwaan has created a scare in Anantnag town. Most of the Ikhwaan cadres were absorbed in the police force and the Territorial Army but the outfit still has its headquarters in Qadipora, Anantnag. This locality incidentally happened to be a strong bastion of Peoples Freedom Party (PFP) leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah. |
