Clash "averted" at Baba Ghulam Shah university over flag hoisting | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 15: As the nation celebrated 64th Independence Day with enthusiasm and fanfare, a possible clash between two groups of students was today averted at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri over the issue of hoisting of the national flag. Reliable police sources said some students from Jammu decided to celebrate the Independence Day in the campus hostel in the afternoon. It was at about 1.45 pm when they hoisted the tricolour on the hostel rooftop. While they started making preparations for the celebrations, some students, most of whom hailed from Kashmir, objected to it and asked them to remove the national flag, the sources added. Sources said when those from Jammu said the tricolour could not be removed, the other group said they would then celebrate the day as a "black day". One of them later took out a black sweater from his hostel room, tied it to a stick and erected it on the hostel rooftop, the sources added. This led to tension at the campus. Sources said there were also heated exchanges between the two groups. However, before the two groups clashed, the university administration acted swiftly and prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn, the sources added. Sources said Registrar, Choudhary Rashid and Dean Col (retired) Khajuria were among those senior university functionaries who pacified the students. The university administration later removed the flag and the black sweater from the hostel rooftop, the sources added. Sources said the Jammu students later hoisted the national flag atop an underconstruction building of the new hostel complex and also sang the national anthem. When contacted, a senior university functionary said all the students later returned to their rooms and there was no tension at the campus. |
