Hurling shoes at politicians is not a new trend in Kashmir

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Aug 15: ASI Abdul Ahad who hurled a shoe at the Chief Minister today when he was unfurling the tricolor at Bakshi Stadium is not a mental wreak. According to his relatives from Ajas Bandipora, he has been a valiant soldier and often ventures in areas where angels fear to tread.
In 1993 when a bomb exploded inside the police headquarters, it was Abdul Ahad who saved the then Additional DGP (CID). He carried him on his shoulders to the vehicle that ultimately took him to the hospital. Abdul Ahad was awarded two gallantry awards. He was also given two out of turn promotions for his bravery. However, the promotions were never given effect and Ahad continues to be an ASI. Ahad has sought judicial intervention for making the government give effect to the promotions. A petition is pending adjudication in the high court.
Ahad's cousin, however, could not tell what prompted him to throw a shoe on the Chief Minister this morning. "He cannot bear injustice. He always fights for rights of the people. The on-going killings might be a reason for today's incident", he said.
The shoe missed the intended target by a whisker. A calm and composed Chief Minister tried to down play the incident and succeeded as well. The incident did not interrupt the function. Omar did not even look back to see how Ahad was dragged out of the stadium by embarrassed security men. Another security man was seen pushing the shoe under a table.
Throwing shoes at politicians is not a new trend in Kashmir. It has been happening here all along. In 1987 the then Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah was greeted with hundreds of worn out shoes at Eidgah, Srinagar on the day of Eid. Same year, shoes were thrown at him at the Martyrs Graveyard, Naqashband Sahib on July 13 where he had come to lay a wreath of flowers on the graves of martyrs. At least seventeen persons were arrested and booked under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities prevention Act 1985 (TADA). A few of them were also detained under Public Safety Act (PSA).
A senior Advocate says Abdul Ahad can be booked for simple assault. "It is a bailable offense and the accused has to be released after preliminary investigation. Ahad must be out by tomorrow morning at the most", he said. But if the past precedents are any indicator, then Abdul Ahad is in jail for two years at least.
