New fare settlement leaves 50 paisa coin tossed for a catch | | | Chaman Kaul EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 16: A fifty paisa coin has become the apple of discord between the passengers and the matador conductors since the new fare order has been mooted of late. The new fare rate enhanced to Rs 3.40 instead of earlier Rs 3 per stop is not settling well among the both as small trifles are witnessed everyday with a local commuter paying rupees 4 and not getting 60 paisa in return from the conductor, who shows inability to produce the change. "Conductors charge 60 paisa more illegally than the prescribed rates of Rs 3 and 40 paisa at the rate of 13 percent increase per stop. Non payment of 50 paisa coin adds fuel to fury," said a disgruntled commuter Vijya Chauhan who has to ferry daily from his home top place of work and has to face the situation daily. This means losing another Rs 18 per month in the process which is unbearable," he laments further. "Due to shortage of coins, we have to face the ire of passengers. Not a single day passes with out confrontation between us and passengers as owners of the vehicle demand Rs 3.50 per passenger from us and we are left with no choice but to charge Rs 4 to save our commission being cut down " Subash a conductor with mini-bus said. "Conductors put up an excuse for not having change of 50 paisa and passengers are helpless as they cannot stay back and lose reaching office in time" Usha Ji daily passenger working with a government department said. Transport Commissioner when contacted said that the decision of price hike was taken in the cabinet and has vested powers in him to increase or decrease it further after market survey to adjust favourable denomination for passengers as well as operators. He informed that law department has restricted to proceed ahead on the pretext that issue being of public interest and proposal being under their consideration, it needed a thorough revision. He said that after having a meeting with transport leaders a smooth conducting of affairs is possible. It is important to mention that last month transporters announced a call for bandh in Jammu in lieu of fare hike after the fuel price was hiked. Government intervened timely and assured them the increase in fare with in a week's time. It may be recalled that transporters demanded 14 percent hike and the demand was discussed in cabinet in presence of planning commission, finance officials and law department officials and 13 percent was accepted. |
