| Bitta Karate released after 16 years | | | Jammu, Oct 25 After spending 16 years behind bars, former JKLF militant Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate walked out of the Kathua jail in Jammu and Kashmir on conditional bail granted by a TADA court here. "We have released Karate from the Kathua jail last evening after completing bail formalities," jail Superintendent Vinod Kumar told PTI.
Karate was taken to Srinagar, where he would be handed over to his family, he said.
The presiding officer of the TADA court N D Wani had ordered on Monday that the accused Karate be released from custody for four months if he furnishes bail bond and personal bond to the tune of Rs one lakh each.
The judge further directed that Karate will not leave the state without prior permission of the court.
Karate had attacked a BSF vehicle, killing two civilians and injuring three BSF jawans including an officer on March 5, 1990 in Koker Bazar area of Srinagar. He was arrested along with two Pakistani militants on June 22, 1990.
Karate's other co-accused in the case has already been granted bail.
The court further said that he had been detained under the Public Safety Act which was earlier quashed by the Supreme Court. |
