| AIATF for united approach against terrorism | | | NEW DELHI: Opposed to clemency for Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal, the All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) on Wednesday suggested a common political approach to fight terrorism as was witnessed in Punjab.
"When Punjab was at the peak of terrorism, all political factions of the country came together to form a strategic front to lead a successful movement that ultimately saw the end of terrorism in the state," AIATF chief MS Bitta said in a statement.
The former Youth Congress leader, who found a mention in RSS mouthpiece Organiser for his campaign against clemency for Afzal, flayed calls from the Congress-PDP-ruled Jammu and Kashmir to commute the convict's death sentence into life imprisonment.
"All political parties must forsake their craving for power and politics... and set aside their rivalries to form a united platform to fight terror," Bitta, a former Punjab minister, said.
He recalled that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has supported clemency for Afzal, was a Congress general secretary when all parties, including his own, took a common stand against militancy in Punjab. |
