8/20/2010 9:32:43 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 20: The incessant rains and subsequent floods in ongoing rainy season have indeed increased the sufferings of the commoners but more than that it has exposed the tall claims of the state government of the public welfare.
One case of such government apathy is construction of a bridge at Mananu on the seasonal nullah at Samba-Udhampur bye pass road in newly carved district Samba.
Local residents narrating their woes say that this ‘nullah’ was flooded several times during ongoing rainy season. It has caused much damage to nearby crops . The water entered in many nearby households and caused damage to the muddy houses.
The area is very backward and maximum houses in the area are ‘Kucha’ ones.
The aggrieved residents alleged that fearing possible threat to life and property due to flood like conditions, they approached concerned authorities many a times. After repeated requests the administration agreed to construct a bridge on this bridge and loan of about two crore rupees from Asian Development Bank (ADB) was sanctioned for this bridge about three years ago.
Locals also alleged that the construction work was inaugurated more than once but the construction could not be started even to date.
This road is strategically important as it leads to district Udhampur and has a direct link between Ammunition Depot Samba and Northern Command Headquarters Udhampur.
Besides strategic importance this road also has importance from tourism point of view. World famous tourist spots of Mansar and Surinsar are just few miles ahead of Mananu.
Locals also stated that due to absence of bridge at this spot, transport is disruted as vehicles come to grinding halt floods when nullahsare in flood. Students, employees and businessmen face difficulties at the government apathy.
Apprehensive of more sufferings, the local people have demanded that a bridge at this point should be constructed soon to mitigate the sufferings of the people of the area.
MLA Samba Yashpal Kundal and DC Samba Mubarak Singh could not be contacted for their comments even after repeated attempts.
