Will Renzu contribute to sustainability of independent press in J&K? | | | ET REPORT Jammu, Aug 20: The sustainability of media is essential for the existence and promotion of an independent press, which is crucial for providing diverse information. But will information director Farooq Renzu be able to make an earnest contribution in this regard? This question continues to bother those newspaper organisations which are getting a step-motherly treatment as regards their share of the government advertisement. The Northlines is one among such dailies which continues to suffer at the hands of the information department because it does not toe the government line and strictly adheres to the ethics of journalism. The association of small newspapers recently hailed the come back of Renzu as information director. Others did not carry any news item in his praise. It does not mean that they are opposed to his come back. What they want is that using his vast experience in the department, he should ensure equitable distribution of advertisement to all the newspapers without any bias. In journalistic circles, The Northlines is known for its professionalism. By stopping the advertisement flow to it, the government has virtually indulged in gagging the freedom of press. A greater responsibility now lies on the shoulders of Renzu. He ought to be careful that the yesman type "editors", who spend most of their time in the information department, do not get undue share of advertisement. Forgetting all the bias against Northlines, information department should lift the "economic sanctions" against it. Its editor R S Gill has always given priority to the cause of journalism over all compulsions. Despite the stoppage of advertisement to it, the newspaper is seen carrying all the stories of the information department. It shows he does not hold any bias against the department, but the latter's attitude is definitely indifferent towards it. Several journalists have expressed serious concern over the department's apathetic attitude towards Northlines and hoped that the issue would be sorted out by Renzu soon in the wider interest of the newspaper industry. |
