| NC's decision to boycott RTC: unfortunate says Congress | | | Jammu, October 25 Reacting to the announcement by the NC Chief Omar Abdullah that their party would boycott round table conference or working group meetings unless human rights violation come to an end in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress party termed it as unfortunate while BJP demanded more powers for the armed forces to tackle the spurt in incidents of militant violence in the state. Congress spokesman Ravinder Sharma said that it is very unfortunate that NC Chief has decided to stay away from the round table conference and working group meetings on the plea of rising cases of human rights violation. He said, instead of shying away from attending the RTC the NC should actively participate in the ongoing dialogue process and should come up with meaningful suggestions to resolve the Kashmir issue. Suggesting that NC chiefs assessment on rising number of human rights cases was not right, Congress spokesman clarified that record of our coalition government is much better than what it was during NC regime. State unit of the Bhartiya Janta Party meanwhile demanded more powers for the security forces to tackle the threat of militancy in the state. Vice President of the BJP Prof Hari Om said here on Wednesday, the stand taken by National Conference President Mr Omar Abdullah on Armed Forces(Special Powers) Act is ridiculous. He said our party is of the view “instead of scrapping the Act the Army should get a free hand in tackling militancy” The BJP leader said “if there were some minor incidents of human rights violations they were the result of the situation created by militants.” Political observers here in the state observed that the campaign launched by the PDP in favour of self-rule seems to have unnerved the National Conference leadership. A senior political analyst while talking to Kashmir Independent Press said, in order to regain its lost ground in Kashmir valley National conference has started raking up the issue of human rights violation and has threatened to stay away from the working groups and the roundtable conferences. He said, the changed stance of the NC chief was the result of the party’s worry over the way Mufti Mohd.Sayeed has shot into the limelight when the centre picked him to lead an unofficial Indian delegation to the UN General Assembly session. |
