Muslim women to fight militants on LoC

RAJOURI, Aug 23:Following militants movements in Kalakote sector, women mostly Muslims in border areas of Rajouri are voluntarily coming forward to get arms training from police to deal with the militants.
Sourcs said that recent movement of militants in border areas of Kalakote have created panic among the housewives who are ready to deal with them at their own and are has reportedly started getting weapon training particularly in Tirath area so that they can help security forces in fight against militancy.
More than a dozen women have reportedly get training while police is extending the programme to some other areas of the district in near future.
Police sources told Early Times that atleast 10 women of Manwa village in Kalakote tehsil of district Rajouri have been trained to handle arms. These women according to sources received training from police in their own village.
The decision to train women in handling arms was reportedly taken by the police after recent militant movements in the area. In Kalakote area atleast 16 militants had infiltrated in recent months and had taken shelter in the area among them 9 had been killed and the same created a panic among the house wives of the area. Sources said that following this, houses wives themselves come forward and requested police to impart them training so that they can defend themselves in the area.
“This training will empower women and build confidence among them so that they can live comfortably in their houses when their men members are out for work”, police sources said.
Sources said that though police has just imparted training to a dozen women, they are planning to extend this programme to other areas.
A senior police officer admitted that police has imparted such training to the rural women in Manwa village. “We did not force anybody to receive such training but we have approached by the people to train them”, police said adding that atleast 8-10 women in this village have completed weapon training.
About the extension of the programme, police is planning to extend training programme to other areas. “We are receiving requests from some areas and we are planning to help them”, police said adding that the training is only meant for self defense of the people. “We are not forcing them to fight against militancy. The training is just for self defense”, he added.
Police is also planning to establish women Village Defense Committee in these areas falling just few kilometer inside Line of Control (LoC). The step according to sources is being taken for putting check on the activity of militants in these areas.
Though these women have still not been given any arms for self defense, police sources said that they will be given the same in near future. “Yes we can provide them weapons for their self defense if they approach us through proper way”, police sources said adding that there is already a demand of the women VDC and they are working out strategy for the same.
