9 more farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

NAGPUR: Nine more farmers have committed suicide in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, in the last 24 hours, a non-governmental organization working for the cause of farmers claimed here on Wednesday.

With these nine deaths, the figure of suicides by farmers in the region since June 2005, has reached 1020 and 410 after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's announcement of relief package to the farmers this year in June, the NGO Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti claimed.

The deceased farmers were identified as Babarao Datarkar, Dahegaon, Digambar Navghare, Wani Belkheda (Amravati), Uttam Mule, Bhambhora (Amravati), Sukhlal Shete, Khaprkhed (Buldana), Babarao Koltakke, Aagar (Akola), Vasant Dhote, Wanjhali (Chandrapur), Wasudeo Kundalkar, Peth (Amravati), Anil Wighe, Padegaon (Wardha) and Purushottam Borkar, Sawli (Chandrapur).

The Samiti has demanded Rs 2500 per quintal price for cotton in the cotton belt of Vidarbha region.
