| Hari Om hail Mukherjee’s appointment as foreign minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER JAMMU | OCT 25 Hailing the appointment of Pranab Mukherjee as the country’s new foreign minister, state BJP vice president and spokesperson Prof. Hari Om today expressed the hope that he would give a rational and national orientation to the Indian foreign policy to take some bold steps forthwith to restore the ground lost to Pakistan and its mentor, the United States, during the past 30 months. He said though the BJP regards the Congress as its major political foe, it as the responsible opposition does recognize the fact that of all the Congressmen, who are in the government, Mukherjee is most able, experienced and dependable and that he appears complement to take a bold stand on matters relating t the country’s integrity and sovereignty. His appointment as the country’s Foreign Minister is a good sign and there are reasons to believe that he would surely take substantial steps aimed at securing for India a place it rightfully deserves in the country of nations, said Hari Om. Prof Hari Om said what the BJP wants Mukherjee to do immediately is to abandon the weak-kneed foreign policy evolved and pursued by K. Natwar Singh and followed religiously by the prime minister and look into the implications of the India-US nuclear deal and convert the same into mechanism that suits the country’s long-term interests, including its defence preparedness. He said the BJP also wants him to make it loud and clear that he is not for the “out-of-box-solution” to the so-called Kashmir issue and that he under no situation would make the Indian Foreign Office (IFO) subservient to the canny, unscrupulous and aggressive Pakistan and the United States.
