PDD proves CM wrong, enforces unscheduled cuts even in metered areas across Jammu | Residents up in arms | | Pardeep Singh EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 27: In sharp contrast to the claims of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Power Development Department (PDD) has miserably failed to redress the power needs of people of Jammu region. Ask the commoners and they would apprise you about the hide and seek which the power plays throughout the day. Not only this, PDD officials have ensured that the general public dances to their tune due to frequent curtailments, especially during peak hours. People accuse government of making tall claims. Reports of frequent power cuts are received regularly from the areas of Gangyal, Sarwal, Bathindi, Narwal, Janipur, Bishnah and Nai-Basti. “It is unfortunate on the part of concerned authorities to disobey directions of chief minister. Power cuts in metered areas is both senseless and offensive,” said a resident of Digiana, Sohan Lal. He added that during peak hours, PDD’s power curtailments compound miseries of the common man. Score of aggrieved locals of Bishnah alleged that PDD has no schedule of curtailments. “Unscheduled curtailments have aggravated the sufferings of common man and are causing inconvenience to the people at large,” said Satpal, a local. Meanwhile a group of residents also lashed out at PDD for not replacing existing wires, which they said have got completely damaged. “Existing network of wires has got damaged and needs immediate replacement. But the lethargic attitude of the PDD is hampering the process and it is only after a major happening that the department would wake up to the impending danger,” said a local. He added that during monsoon, Jammu has witnessed the apathy of the power development department in supplying regular power across the city and in the outskirts. An official of PDD while admitting the dismal scenario said that department has been unable to replace the wires which have already crossed their age of 10 years. He added that government is pooling in money but to no avail. “At most of the places, PDD is yet to replace old wires. Power failure is mostly because of inefficiency which the PDD has got used to,” said locals. Further, the department officials could not be contacted for their comments. It needs to be reiterated that scenario is this, even after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday called for necessary reforms to bridge the gap between the energy supply and revenue collection. As per newspaper reports, he said “my endeavor is to make power available to the people round the clock for both commercial and domestic purposes, however the collection of tariff is imperative.” In the same meeting, CM directed PDD to put all efforts for ensuring hundred percent revenue collections instead of mooting curtailment programme.
