Budgam emerges boys’ U-19 football champion | Jammu girls’ bag gold; beat Srinagar 2-0 | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Beating the host Jammu district 3-1 in the final today, district Budgam clinched the first ever trophy after the side emerged winner in the inter-district state level boys’ under-19 football tournament held under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), here. The title, otherwise remained with the twin Capital districts of Jammu and Srinagar, went in favour of energetic side from Budgam, which turned the tables against the fighting Jammu boys to take home the glittering trophy. Happiness was quite visible on the faces of these well build side, who celebrated the victory in a big way. “We have won the title for the first time by beating a strong side of Jammu district, which in the semi-finals trounced another contender for the title, district Srinagar,” coach of the Budgam team, Shabir Ahmed (PEM) told SAN. Earlier, Jammu took the first lead netting the ball in the very fifth minute, but only to concede three goals in the next 15 minutes. Rakesh Roshan brought in the first blood. The lead was equalized in the 10th minute by Khalid, followed by two more goals by Mustafa and Muzaffar in the 16th and 18th minute respectively. The second half of the match remained a one-sided affair with both sides playing a dilly dallying battle. Since Srinagar boys lost to Jammu in the well contested semifinal yesterday, they fully supported district Budgam during the 90-minute game. Srinagar district finished third in the competition beating district Bandipur by three goals to nil in the hardliner. While Wasiq struck twice, Dabur scored one goal to make it a one-sided affair. In girls section, the under-19 trophy went to Jammu district after the team defeated Srinagar 2-0 in the best of three series. Only two teams had reported for the girls’ event which prompted the organizers to make it a series to find the best of the stuff to raise state team. Later, Deputy Director DYSS, Gulshan Ara, who was chief guest in the valedictory function, gave away winners and runners-up trophies. She encouraged the participants to work hard for the upcoming National School Games in football being hosted by the Department in Jammu. Assistant Director DYSS, Ashok Kumar was guest of honour in the prize distribution function, who presented medals to the first three position holders in both boys and girls sections.
