Alarmed over rising cases of Diarrhea, J&K govt launches cleanliness drive | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Alarmed over reports of breakout of diarrhea in hilly Doda and Ramban districts of Jammu province, several senior government teachers have urged the school education department to launch a massive cleanliness drive to clean the water tanks and reservoirs feeding water supply to school children. Fearing spread of diarrhea, state government has already directed education department to close down schools for a period of three-four days in affected districts keeping in view the risk factors involved in risking the lives of minor children. To begin with, the drive would be carried out in affected districts of the Jammu province and later it can be stretched to other districts of the state. Out of more than 2000 cases of diarrhea reported so far in the districts of Doda and Ramban, major chunk of patients are school going children. According to official sources, preliminary reports have revealed that water supply was contaminated due to fresh spell of rain and variety of other reasons including poor maintenance of the water tanks inside school premises. According to the random survey conducted across the state government run schools, it was found that water tanks have not been cleaned for over two years and in majority of places, main holes used to close down mouth of water tanks have been found missing inviting trouble for school authorities. As per the fresh directions issued to the state government run schools, education department has directed the senior staff members to strictly monitor cleanliness drive in their school premises and ensure that the water tanks and reservoirs are cleaned regularly and are covered properly.
