Training programme on water productivity on agriculture conclude | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 31: A fourteen day trainers ‘training programme’ from Aug 18 to 31, on “Scaling up of water productivity in agriculture for livelihood through teaching-cum-demonstration” coordinated by Er.N.K.Gupta a senior scientist, water management research centre at SKUAST-Jammu concluded here today about 20 officers of Agriculture Department covering from eight district of Jammu province comprising of subject matter specialists of district and sub district level of two scientists from SKUAST-Jammu participated in the said training programme. During the valedictory function, Dr.K.S Risam, Director extension education SKUAST-Jammu deliberated that country receive about 400 mha-m of rainfall annually, out of which 70 mha-m goes as immediate evaporation, 115 mha-m as surface runoff and 215 thereby retards the progress and affects the economy of the country because 67 percent of arable area is also rainfed. Presently most of the portion of land under cereals, oilseed and other crops is also rainfed. The monsoon rainfall is the main source of water in these areas. So water conservation is the need of the hour. Risam further added that the training program imparted the technical knowledge to the participating comprising overall scenario of water availability, tapping of run-off in the soil, water harvesting, estimation of water requirements of agricultural crops and plants, drought and their management and finally the judicious and effective use of water to increase the productivity. The training programme was of great benefit and technical significance to the participating officers, Dr.A.S Bali, Chief Scientist and Head, Water Management in his address said that Ministry of Agriculture, Govt to India, through ICAR launched the said project so as to create awareness among the masses to save water by which we can increase our corp. productivity per drop of water and for achieving these objectives agriculturist must know the water requirement of the concerned crop and irrigate accordingly. By acquiring such type of training in which all the things were discussed theoretically followed by practical and later on filed visit raised their confidence level and they can perform their duties in much better way now. In the end Dr.Mohd. Saleem, Prof, division of Agro forestry, presented the vote of thanks.
