JAMMU, Aug 31: Everyone in the political established in Jammu and Kashmir, including those belonging to the fundamentally anti-Jammu NC and the Congress, consistently say that the coalition government is committed to treating all the three regions of the state equally and that those who say that the people of Jammu are being willfully discriminated against are highly biased and communal. They are "chauvinists" and "their approach is parochial and sectarian," the critics of those who demand justice for Jammu, in fact, say, notwithstanding the fact that all the commissions which were appointed from time to time by the state government to look into the complaints of the people of Jammu province have candidly and unambiguously acknowledged that their complaints are genuine and well-founded.
In other words, it is an established fact that the Kashmiri-dominated and patently Valley-centric successive governments in the state have maltreated the people of Jammu province, which contributes more than 70 per cent revenue to the state exchequer every year, and handed down to the people of Jammu province a system that entitles them to crumbs only. Ironically, the Jammu-based ministers have all along supported the anti-Jammu policies being pursued by their Kashmiri masters. The role of the today's Jammu-based ministers is no different. They are, in fact, giving their unqualified support to their Kashmiri masters in order to hit the people of Jammu province and remain in the good books of the NC and the Chief Minister. It must remain a matter of shame that the Jammu-based ministers have forgotten their constituency for the sake of personal power and profit or to fulfill their insatiable lust for power and pelf.
The truth is that the people of Jammu province are suffering more under the present out-and-out anti-Jammu ruling coalition. The extent of their sufferings and neglect can be gauged from just one recent example. The case in point is the rigorous exclusion by the Public Service commission of the Jammu talent with a view to accommodating the Kashmiri candidates in the higher education department and pampering further the already rather pampered Kashmir, where the unemployment rate, according to the official figures, is less than 30 per cement, as against over 69 per cent in Jammu province.
What is the share of the highly talented and educated Jammu youth in the latest Public Service Commission-prepared list of the selected candidates for the posts of lecturers in various disciplines? Out of a total of 62 candidates selected as lecturers in Urdu, the share of Jammu is 18 (29 per cent) and that of Kashmir 44 (71 per cent). Out of a total of 71 candidates selected for the posts in lecturers in Political Science, the share of Jammu is 21 (29.57 per cent) and that of Kashmir 50 (70.33 per cent). Out of a total of 11 candidates selected as lecturers in statistics, the share of Jammu is 3 (27.27 per cent) and that of Kashmir 8 (72.73 per cent). Out of a total of 51 candidates selected as lecturers in Botany, the share of Jammu is 19 (37.25 per cent) and that of Kashmir 32 (62.75 per cent). Out of a total of 106 candidates selected for the posts of lecturers in Zoology, the share of Jammu is 41 (38.67 per cent) and that of Kashmir 65 (61.33 per cent). Out of a total of 79 candidates selected for the posts of lecturers in English, the share of Jammu is 15 (18.98 per cent) and that of Kashmir 64 (81.20 per cent). Similarly, out of a total of 17 selected dental surgeons, the share of Jammu is 6 (35.29 per cent) and that of Kashmir 64.71 per cent).
These figures speak for themselves and re-establish that the people of Jammu province have no place in the scheme of things of the NC-Congress ruling coalition. This is height of injustice and just cannot be tolerated. Where are the Jammu-based Ministers? Will they explain their position? Will they take up the case of Jammu with their Chief Minister and obtain justice for the cheated Jammu youth? And, where are the Panthers Party and the BJP? What are doing? Are they sleeping? Or, are they also party to the discrimination perpetrated on the Jammu youth?
One thing is loud and clear: The people of Jammu province shall never ever obtain their due share in the state's political and economic processes. They can obtain their due share only if the state is trifurcated into three states and the people of Jammu get the power to legislate. The humbled, humiliated, discriminated against and badly let down people of Jammu have to sit up and devise a strategy in order to get freedom from the cruel clutches of the Kashmiri rulers and their henchmen in Jammu. There is no other alternative to the division of the state. |
