| Pvt institutes to implement Govt's quota proposal | | | Thursday , October 26
New Delhi: In a surprising move, private unaided institutes across India have unanimously agreed to implement the new OBC quota proposal.
The Vice Chancellors of private unaided institutes across India - including those of Symbiosis, Manipal and BITS Pilani
- met with Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh on Thursday informing him of their decision.
Apart from Arjun Singh, the Chief Ministers of most states attended the meeting, which was approached with caution by the Vice Chancellors.
The meeting ended with three main points being pondered upon. The Vice Chancellors said that they wanted reservations to be staggered in the institutes.
They also asked the HRD Minister to give them aid with which they could increase the number of seats in their institutes to accomodate students from the OBC category.
The Government in turn asked the private colleges to regulate their fee for the OBC category.
There is still some debate over the fee structure and whether general category students will have to pay more or not, but the quota seems to be through for now.
And the most happy man right now is obviously Arjun Singh. He has expressed satisfaction that private unaided colleges have now agreed to reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs.
"We're happy private colleges have agreed to our reservation proposal," he was quoted as saying.
