| Strategy for preventing waterborne diseases, dengue on anvil: Sham | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 1: Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today said that the government has embarked upon a long term strategy for preventing the spread of water borne ailments, besides malaria and dengue in the state. Sharma said that taking a cue from the neighboring Himachal Pradesh state, the Government has constituted a coordination committee of five important departments of Health, Public Health Engineering, Jammu Local Bodies and Drug Control to monitor the quality of water, maintaining of cleanliness of water reservoirs and potable water resources, regular check of food items in the markets and checking of leakages in the PHE network, besides measures for containing breeding of the mosquitoes instrumental for spreading malaria and dengu. Minister was addressing media persons after chairing a high level meeting convened to review the measures taken to deal with the problem of gastroenteritis in parts of Jammu region and in the valley. About the reports about the dengue patients in Jammu, the minister clarified that there was no such case reported from any part of the Jammu region, however adding that three cases which were admitted with such symptoms have been tested positive for malaria. “The blood samples of these suspected persons were sent to Delhi and the report of the same indicated that they were suffering from malaria, not from dengue. Giving details about the measures taken to deal with the outbreak of diarrhea in parts of Doda and Ramban districts, the Minister said that barring death of two persons majority of the patient has been discharged after proper treatment. He said that from 22-8-2010 to 1-9-2010, total 1526 patients reported in OPD in District Hospital Doda of which 1245 patient were admitted. 18 referred for advanced treatment, while 1177 were discharged after treatment. He said for now only 68 patients are still under treated. About cases of diarrhea in Ramban, he said 595 patients with symptoms of gastroenteritis were reported at CHC Banihal OPD, of which 104 were admitted out which a majority of100 patients have already been discharged and 4 still under going treatment. Earlier, addressing the meeting the Minister stressed on the concerned departments to work in close tandem to deal with the situation and implement the long and short term measures for preventing outbreak of infective diseases. He said the exact cause of the spread of the ailment among people and its preventive measures would be found out to avoid occurrence of such type of situation in future.
