| Two militants escape cordon in Mendher | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Sept 1: Two militants of Lashkar-i-Toiba have reportedly escaped a cordon laid down by the army, police and Centre Reserve Police Force in Sanjyote area of Mendher. The encounter was started about 1 pm on Wednesday. Police sources said that on the input of presence of two LeT militants in Sanjyote area of tehsil Mendhar in border district Poonch, Special Operation Group, Army and CRPF cordoned off the area. The contact was established at about 1 PM when militants reportedly hurled a hand grenade towards the troops following which they opened firing which was retailed by the army, sources said. Police sources said that following a short encounter, the militants stopped firing and police, army and CRPF launched search operation. However both the militants were reportedly slipped from the area, sources said. When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police Poonch, Manmohan Singh admitted that they entered in gunfight with the militants in the afternoon but militants took shelter of tall grass and maize crops and slipped the cordoned. He said that they had an information of two LeT militants. "When our people laid cordoned, they lobbed grenade towards us which missed target following which security forces retaliated", SSP said adding that the area has lot of safe sides for the militants and they slipped taking advantage of the maize crops. This is the same place where 3 militants slipped on August 7 after a long gun fight in which an army follower Ruksar Mirza was killed. |
