| Corrupt officers still enjoying immunity in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 1: Notwithstanding the claims of Government to weed out the corruption from the strife- torn J&K State by taking action against the corrupt bureaucrats including IAS, IPS and IFS officers as well as heads of Departments iinvolved in corrupt practices, the corrupt offices in the state despite being charged by the Vigilance organisation are still enjoying the aptronage of Governemnt by working on prize posts. According to high placed sources the Government has till date failed to strip off such officers who have been indicted by Vigilance or other agencies for their involvement in corrupt practices and against whom the cases have been praima facie established during he prilimanary investigations. Sources said instead of taking action against such officers by placing them under suspension as per the standing rules or attaching them so that they cann't tamper the official records and evidence agaisnt them, the coalition Government has given all relief to such officers by not touching them at all with the result these officers continue to call shots and misuse their offical positon with full backing of the Government. Sources said though Vigilance has alrady identified over 150 such officers against whom cases are pending for action with it, but linent view taken by the Government has forced the agency to also slow down the process of investigation against them. This attitude of the Government instead of weeding out the corruption from the public life and give a clean administration will help the corrupt elements to give more roots, sources added. Sources said in such type of a case the General Adminsitrative Department (GAD) has given sanction to the prosecution of a Head of the Department and his Section Officer for malpractices in the Department during the year 2006 in making purcahsed of some equipments as the Chairman Purcases Committee. The Vigilance after prima facie has established that the said officer and the SO were involved in the corrupt practices and to prosecute them under alw it has sought the permission from the Government against the duo which was granted later. But the said officer contineus to head the organisation and till date the Department has failed to contemplate action against him under the standing rules which totally say that in case any official or officer is prosecuted for corruption charges he or she should be devisted of his or her powers so that he or she can not tamper with the official records to destroy the evidence. But to cover the corrupt officers Government is providing all leverage to them, sources said. Sources said it is not unique case ot his nature but there are many more officers against whom the porsecution for their corrupt practices has been sanctioned but still they enjoy the blessings from corridors of power. This way these officers continue to misuse their official position and loot the state exchequere, sources added. Sources said the calims regarding the Government to eradicate the corruption is proving a half hearted affair and its performance in this regard is in no way better than its predecessors. If during the rule of Mufti Mohamemd Syed andGhulamNabi Azad the pathwaris, clerks and other low-paid employees were arrested by Vigilance for corruption charges and the Omar Abdullah led Government which has claimed to lay its hands on big fishes has still go a long way in translating its words into action. |
