EARLY TIMES REPORT
THATHRI (Doda), Sep 2: Humiliated over the alleged police torture, a Tata sumo driver today committed suicide by jumping into Chenab river from Thathri bridge here, an hour, or so before iftar with his family for which he had brought famous sweets from Kud.
Angered by the alleged incident, locals stoned the Thathri police station, besides setting ablaze two police vehicles. To disperse them, police fired several teargas shells and resorted to firing in the air. In the ding-dong battles, at least a dozen people, including women, and some cops sustained wounds.
Mohammad Rafi, son of Nazir Ahmad Mochi of Nagni Pashalla in Gandoh, Doda, was on his way home from Jammu when a police party led by Thathri police station SHO, Inspector Ravinder Kumar Rakwal intercepted his sumo (JK06/2652) at Thathri.
Eyewitnesses said cops slapped him and then dragged him to the nearby Thathri police station where he was allegedly beaten. He was so humiliated by the alleged police torture that when he got released from the police station, he straightway walked towards the nearby Thathri bridge and jumped into Chenab from there, the eyewitnesses added.
The news of suicide by him spread like wildfire and soon locals gathered in the main Thathri market. After some time, Rafi's family members and relatives also reached there.
All of them first searched for Rafi and when they could not find him, tempers ran high and all of them moved towards the police station in a mob and attacked it with stones and bricks, besides beating some cops.
As the mob swelled, police fired teargas shells and resorted to firing in the air to disperse them. Though the protesters dispersed, they regrouped after sometime, engaging police in ding-dong battles. To prevent the situation from worsening further, reinforcements were rushed to the spot from Doda, but they were stopped by another group of agitated people near power station, about one and a half kilometer short of Thathri, triggering another ding-dong battle.
The matter was, however, sorted out with the intervention of the area elders and some politicians after they were assured that action would be taken against the erring cops.
People have given a call for Thathri bandh tomorrow. Official sources said apprehending trouble Friday, a large number of police personnel had been deployed in Thathri.
The injured included Sharifa Begum, Salma, daughter of Mohammad Afzal and Rubina Begum, wife of Mohammad Ashraf. The SHO also sustained minor injuries in stone pelting, the sources added. Rafi is survived by his wife Shaheena Begum and one-year-old son Adil Hussain.
Sharifa, who was related to Shaheena, said Rafi had called up his wife in the afternoon and told her that he was bringing sweets from Kud for iftar.
