Early Times Report
Rajouri, Sept 3: Although Hindus were celebrating birth of Lord Krishan and Muslims as Juma-tul-Vida (Good Friday), Power Development Department intensified power curtailments during these festivals in Rajouri and Poonch district which irked the locals against the department.
When residents of Rajouri were celebrating Lord Krishan’s birthday, power development department stage their drama of unscheduled power curtailments. Among the total 24 hours, the residents were supplied not more than 3 hours power which is open example for eye openers about the lethargic attitude of the department in providing uninterrupted power supply to the residents. Especially on the day of religious function of Hindus, PDD made extra cuts. “This is injustice with the Hindus as PDD did not bothered to provide us electricity even on the holy day of Janamashtami”, Vibodh Gupta, State Secretary of Bhartiya Janta Party said adding that the department has no accountability before people and all officials from bottom to top are allegedly involved in the misappropriation of funds.
A religious and social worker Vijay Kochhar also expressed his dissatisfaction over the functioning of PDD in Rajouri. He said that when the cut is of only 4 to6 hours, they are being told the reason of unscheduled cut of more than 14 hours. He said that on the holy day of Hindus, PDD played drama with the public and continuously exercised cuts.
Meanwhile residents of Muslims community are also anguished with the department. They said that during the Ramadhan, if PDD avoid cuts of evening yet there were regular many unscheduled cuts. When the community was celebrating Juma-tul-Vida- the last Friday of holy month Ramadhan, PDD used to exercise atleast 12 cuts in an hour. “After every five minutes, PDD used to cut power”, Shahbaz Khan, a local social worker said adding that power curtailment has gone up to 18 hours among the total 24 hours. “When we just switch on lamp, PDD people exercise cuts and the drama was especially played by the department on Friday”, Khan said demanding enquiry into the irregular and unscheduled cuts of PDD on the occasions of festivals. “We want high level probe in the power cuts especially on Friday and Janamastami when Hindus and Muslim community were celebrating their holy days”, a local Manzoor Ahmed said demanding immediate action on the officials involved in exercising extra cuts.
Locals said that PDD manage extra cuts only to harass the people and since government had ordered for uninterrupted power supply in the holy month, engineers seemed to have put government order in the dustbin.
When Ramzan was started, Minister of State for Power Shabir Ahmed Khan had assured uninterrupted power supply during the month besides he had assured action if there will be any violation of the orders. However the order of Khan has no meaning for PDD engineers in Rajouri and Poonch and they continued to violate the order by holding extra cuts of power.
It is pertinent to mention here that situation is more grim in Budhal, Kalakote, Nowshera, Darhal, Manjakote, Thanamandi, Baflias, Surankote, Chandimarh, Mandi, Poonch, Mendher and Balakote areas of the twin border districts where people complained about complete failure of PDD in providing power supply to the people. Residents of Ponthal area in Keeri sector have alleged that the linemen of the area are demanding bribe for supplying electricity to the people. They alleged that those who are paying it are getting power and those who deny to pay them are being denied the supply.
Residents of Rajouri from all communities have appealed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is the over all incharge of PDD to look into the complaints of the people of this border areas and initiate an enquiry over the issue.
