Geelani's challenge to Abdullahs
‘Let them walk from Lal Chowk to Regal cinema’

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 4: Hurriyat chairman, Syed Ali Geelani's challenge to Dr Farooq to address a rally in Lal Chowk generated interesting discussion across Kashmir Saturday. While some quarters have criticized Geelani for being "rude" others have welcomed the statement. According to them this was the best way to ascertain the representative character of the people of Kashmir.
New Delhi has been asking the Kashmiri leadership to prove their representative character. The JKLF chairman, Malik Muhammad Yasin at one point of time formed his own election commission with renowned human rights defender Tapan Bose and Sidiq Wahid as its members. However, the idea could not take off for various reasons. The idea was severely opposed.
The debate over representative character continued till 2008 agitation. Today Geelani's statement triggered it once again. The reality of today's Kashmir may favour the separatists but then Kashmiris are unpredictable to the hilt. After 2008 agitation which left sixty people dead, the world was surprised to see massive participation of electorate in the assembly elections. No doubt the voters made clear that they were not giving up their Azadi claim by casting votes but the participation attracted international attention much to the discomfort of Geelani and others. Commenting on the rush outside the polling booths, a New Delhi based journalist remarked: "Kashmiris are God because only God can be so unpredictable."
Geelani supporters are confident that nobody from the pro-India lobby can address a rally in Lal Chowk or anywhere else in the Valley without security. "Geelani on the other hand travels in auto rickshaws at times. Last year he gave police a slip several times to reach his supporters in Lal Chowk and down town area of Srinagar city", they said.
The enthusiastic supporters are ready to `amend' Geelani's challenge if Dr Farooq or Omar Farooq accepts it. "We will not tell them to address a rally because we know they cannot do it. Instead let them walk from erstwhile Palladium cinema to erstwhile Regal cinema on any `working' day", they challenged.
