J&K Gujjars offer conditional support to Jat community

JAMMU, Sept 5: Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today offered conditional support to Jat community of state in their current struggle for grant of Other Backward Class (OBC) status.
In a letter addressed to different Jat Organizations and community leaders sent through Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, Gujjars have asked Jat community to come forward in response to their offer for framing a united Gujjar-Jat struggle front to struggle over the issues related to both the communities residing in 12 different states of India.
Gujjars have offered this support subject to the condition that if Jat community residing in other states of India supports various Gujjar movements going on in different states for tribal identity including the state of Rajasthan where Gujjars are struggling hard for grant of ST status since last 63 years.
Giving details, Secretary Tribal Foundation Dr.Javaid Rahi said that they are ready to join OBC struggle of Jat if they moblize their community in Gujjar struggle for tribal status going in different state including Rajasthan. He said that they have written to both Gujjar and Jat leaders to unite for the cause of the two communities.
Letter reads that Gujjars constitute more than 20 percent of total population of the state and are one and there are hundreds of examples of cross-community Muslim Gujjar- Muslim Jat marriages in state of J&K which are very popular among both communities of twin border district of Rajouri-Poonch. Letter further reads that the Gujjars of Rajasthan are struggling hard for grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and around one 71 people of Gujjar tribe were killed in this historic struggle.
Letter further reads historically, culturally and socially Gujjars and Jats share many similarities and should hence join hands for a united struggle for rights of both the communities
