| Cycling expedition returns | | | Udhampur, Oct 26, 2006 The Munre Himmalayan Cycling Expeditions returned to Udhampur after a successful accomplishment of Cycling expedition. The team consisted of one Officer, one Junior Commissioned Officer and 10 Other Ranks and was led by Captain Parikshit Katwale of 3 Engineer Regiment. The expedition was flagged off from Udhampur on 20 Sep 06 and was flagged in today at Udhampur by Maj Gen NB Patel, Chief Engineer, Head Quarters Northern Command. The team traversed through the Himalayan ranges crossing the important passes of Rohtang, Tanglangla, Fotula & Zojila, covering a distance of 1400 kms and negotiating steep heights from 9000 to 17500 ft. The route passed through the mountainous terrain of Pir Panjal and Himalayan ranges. The cycling expedition provided the team with an opportunity to experience hazardous cold climatic conditions of incessant rain and snowfall. The team interacted with the locals, organizing medical camps, spreading the message of good will, there by enhancing the image of the Army. Three Engineer Regiment was raised in Leh on 01 Nov 1965. The unit proudly boasts of a Vir Chakra, nine Sena Medals and a host of Mentions-in-despatches and Commendation Cards. The Regiment is recipient of Lieutenant General PS Roy’s Trophy for Adventure activities from Engineer-in-Chief, integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence in 2004 and has participated in expeditions to Antarctica, conducted trekking in Eastern Himalaya ranges, rafting in dangerous rapids, Sailing and wind surfing in deep ocean waters and cycled across the length and breadth of South Indian states. |
