Omar wooing Geelani, Dr. Farooq ignoring Geelani but why? | | | Scion of Abdullah dynasty and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is making all possible efforts to reach out to the stakeholders in Kashmir valley to kick start the stalled dialogue process. He had even approached hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani via his close aides with an open offer to join the dialogue process and issue an appeal to restore normalcy in the Kashmir valley to soothe the tempers. Geelani gave them a patient hearing and in return extracted an assurance from the messengers that he would be allowed to carry out his programme in a democratic way.Hopes of early breakthrough were raised when Geelani issued an appeal to the angry youngsters in Kashmir not to pelt stones and resort to peaceful means of protest.Five point conditions listed by Geelani before joining the dialogue was also seen by the Kashmir watchers as a climbdown from his own stated position on Kashmir issue. In contrast the senior Abdullah and Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah is fuming with anger at the mere mention of hardliner. He is not prepared to even recognise the presence of Syed Ali Shah Geelani. On Saturday Dr Abdullah almost lost his cool when he was repeatedly asked by the reporters in Jammu whether he is ready to pick the gauntlet thrown at him by the octanegairian hawk to walk freely in Lal Chow area without his security cover and hold public rally. Instead of accepting the challenge and put a lid on the separatist leaders mouth Dr Abdullah raised question marks over his credentials. Who is Geelani? What are his credentials in front of Farooq Abdullah. I do not want to accept the challenege, Dr Abdullah commented. Dr Abdullah also tried to underplay the futility of dialogue offer as he went on to comment Kashmir will not go where. "Its accession with India is full and final and Geelani will not gain anything out of these proposals and threats".On the question of plebiscite Dr Abdullah lashed out at the separatist leader. If he is so worried about taking Kashmir to Pakistan he should first go there and stay there. They are asking for Plebiscite here but it should be first held in POK and northern areas under Pakistani control. All those people who are privy to contours of the political package being readied by the New Delhi to reach out to the people in Kashmir on the eve of Eid celebrations Dr Abdullah's reaction was too critical and too loud and unwanted. The verbal spat between the two also came as a shocker for many as it came close on the heels of Geelani’s attempt to storm traditional pockets of National Conference in down town Srinagar. Geelani’s presence at Pathar masjid during Friday prayers seems to have infuriated the senior Abdullah more than anything else. His annoyance was thus reflected in the tone and tenor of his comment. At the same time his remarks had raised many question marks over efforts made by New Delhi to woo separatist’s leaders to join the dialogue table. To begin with if both father and son do not see eye to eye with each other on the subject it would be really difficult for the gentleman engaged in track II diplomacy to rope in all shades of opinion. The separatist leadership is upbeat as they see mainstream political parties vying with each other to stand behind them to claim victory as they are see Delhi bending a bit to break the cycle of violence. At the same time the way Dr Abdullah has lashed out at Geelani question marks have also been raised about the contents of the political package. If sitting in New Delhi Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah is not willing to sing in chorus with his own son and the political leaders laboring hard to restore normalcy he should be asked to explain why he is angry with Geelani and not willing to accept him.
