Separate Jammu from Kashmir and then talk to separatist Geelani

RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 5: There are reports that Union Government may accept the pernicious demands of Syed Ali Shah Geelani in its desperate bid to purchase temporary peace in the troubled Kashmir. The reports suggest that the Union Government has allowed itself to be influenced by the dubious back channels and controversial and terrorist and separatist-friendly members of the so-called civil society like the rogue Swami Agnivesh and that it is working overtime to win over Geelani by accepting four of the five demands he put forth the other day. The demands include revocation of the Armed Forces Special powers Act and Public Safety Act; release of all those booked under various heinous charges, including the charges of sedition; withdrawal of cases against them; withdrawal of troops and paramilitary forces; punishment to those "responsible for killings during recent protests"; and declaration of Jammu and Kashmir as "disputed territory."
The reports emanating from New Delhi appear to be correct. For, a number of Kashmir and Jammu-based dailies have carried reports to the effect that New Delhi may accept all but one demand as put forth by Geelani on the eve of Eid. The Union Government, according to these reports, is not prepared to accept the demand concerning the status of Jammu and Kashmir. The demands of Geelani, if accepted, would not only mean a crowning triumph of this dreaded militant and separatist and rank communalist, but it would also mean the last nail in the coffin of the ruling National Conference, negation of all that the Indian nation did in Kashmir during all these 63 years of the state's integration into India, negation of the supreme sacrifices the Indian Army and paramilitary forces made in Kashmir to defend the country's unity, integrity and paramount sovereign interests and seal the fate of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, besides the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and the minority community of Sikhs in the Valley.
But more than that, the acceptance of the demands as put forth by Geelani would negate the work done in Kashmir by Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and P V Narasimha Rao, notwithstanding their some acts of omission and commission, including the grant of special status to Kashmir on the score of religion overlooking the warning that "grant of special status to Kashmir on the score of religion would enable it to assume independence afterwards" and bringing back to power the deflated Sheikh Abdullah in 1975 - Sheikh Abdullah an ardent votary of plebiscite and a Switzerland-type independent Kashmir. Nehru, Gandhi, Shastri and Rao had all acted whenever the situation in Kashmir so warranted. Each one of them tried to bring Jammu and Kashmir closer to New Delhi by bringing the state under the ambit of Central laws and institutions. That the present dispensation which otherwise hails Nehru and Gandhi day in and day out is reportedly contemplating an unsettling move to cultivate the unrelenting Geelani, who, besides other separatists, is squarely responsible for the prevailing situation in the Valley simply shows that the Indian State has gone into wrong hands and that the custodians of the Indian State, instead of defending the unity and integrity of the country and reining in separatists and communalists like Geelani, are actually working for the demise of India. This is not acceptable.
If the Union Government, which is virtually controlled by those who never contested election or those who contested election but were comprehensively defeated by the intelligent Indian electorate, has finally made up its mind to barter the country's paramount sovereign interests to please and appease Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir like Geelani, it should at once segregate Jammu and Ladakh from Kashmir and bifurcate the Valley. (More than one dozen ministers in the Union Cabinet are those who have never contested election or who contested election but lost. Most of the vital portfolios, including the portfolios of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Culture, Information and Broadcasting, Power and so on, are in the hands of those who are not accountable to the Indian electorate because they are members of the Rajya Sabha. It could happen only in India. Can anybody anywhere in the world ever imagine that the country's Prime Minister would the one who had never faced the electorate or faced the electorate once but lost his security deposit? But India is great country. Everything can be done here in the name of democracy.)
The Union Government should immediately separate Jammu and Ladakh from Kashmir because the people of these two provinces are for their complete integration into India and for a stern action against the restive Kashmir and Kashmiri separatists and extremists. They have not given the Union Government the mandate to take a decision on their political future or to throw in their lot with such regressive and perverted Kashmiri separatists as Geelani. They are not even prepared to share the views of the NC and the PDP. Similar is the attitude of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus. They want a dispensation that is within Kashmir and within India where the Indian Constitution flows freely. They want a separate homeland invested with Union Territory status.
The Union Government just can't afford to overlook these STARK REALITIES in Jammu and Kashmir. To overlook these STAR REALITIES would be only to provoke strong protests in Jammu and Ladakh and the Hindu refugee camps and create more problems than resolving the existing ones.
