JeM commander killed; man, two sons held for giving him refuge | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 5: A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) divisional commander of Pakistan, who had taken refuge in a house at Thera Jatan Da in Bhattidhar area of Mendhar, Poonch, was this morning shot dead by police and army jawans in a brief encounter. The house, in which the JeM commander was hiding, belonged to Abdul Khaliq, Poonch SSP Manmohan Singh said. He said acting on a tip-off about the presence of JeM divisional commander Abu Waqas alias Umar Khatib in Khaliq's house, police and 37 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) jawans laid a cordon around it at about 7.30 am. However, when the jawans asked him to surrender, he hurled a grenade towards them and made an attempt to flee. The jawans, who had already laid multiple ambushes on the possible escape routes, foiled his bid to escape and shot him dead in a brief exchange of fire, the SSP added. He said the slain militant hailed from Pakistan. One AK rifle along with two magazines, one pistol, its one magazine, two mobile phones, one wireless set, three Nokia batteries, three identity cards, one Airtel SIM, Rs 60,125 in Indian currency, one Chinese grenade, 35 pencil cells and one pouch were recovered from him. RR jawan Sajjan Kumar was wounded in the encounter and admitted to hospital. His condition was stated to be stable. The SSP said after killing the JeM commander, the jawans raided Khaliq's house and arrested him along his sons -- Zubair Hussain and Saddam Hussain. They were held for giving shelter to the slain militant and for being hand-in-glove with the JeM cadres active in and around Mendhar. Zubair had a militant past. He was earlier apprehended by police in February this year after the killing of another JeM top commander Shikari in Mendhar area. He was later bailed out by the court of law. However, after his release, he again joined JeM cadres and became active, the SSP added. He said after his arrest, police recovered one AK rifle at his instance from his house. Singh said the sustained interrogation of Khaliq and his two sons was on. |
