EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Sep 6: Former Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd, M Y Khan may get some important assignment in the interest of th economic and financial development of Jammu and Kashmir.
Official sources today said that after Hasib Drabu was asked to quit as Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank the state Government functionaries have come to he conclusion that the ongoing development activities be carried out under th supervision of an expert.
These functionaries have found that the services of M Y Khan could be utilised not only for streamlining the development activities but also improve the functioning of the J&K Bank.
Sources said that the claims being made by Drabu as far as the level of profit the bank recorded during the time he functioned as chairman was not as high as claimed by him.
As such experts were being asked to examine it in detail and point out some of the glaring ommissions and commissions having been committed by Drabu including his personal prejudice that played a key role in seeing some of the talented officers out of the Bank and others having been denied promotions for the last several yers with the result those in the union category had superseded many of them.
Sources said that at present the Government was considering two proposals.
One was to segregate the post of the chairman J&K Bank in two so that "we have one Managing Director and another executive chairman as many private banks in the counry have. "If this proposal was accepted M Y Khan may be appointed executive chairman in an honorary capacity so that he is in a position to reverse some of the wrongs committed during Drabu's time.
Second proposal is to constitute a committee of experts which would be asked to carrying daily monitoring of the development projects, including those in the central sector. This committee may be headed by M Y Khan who is considered to be an financial expert.
Government functionaries wanted to remove an impression that has gone round that Mushtaq Uri,who name is being cleared for the post of chairman J&K Bank, is the son of Mohd Shafi Uri, MP and a former Minister. They said Mushtaq has functioned as executive Director in J&K Bank and it was under his guidance that M Y Khan learnt all the intricacies and naunces of banking. When Khan joined J&K Bank as chairman years ago he was a raw man in the sense that he had no experience in banking but was an able administrator which became evident by his success in changing the industrial structure in the stat as General Manager and later Managing Director SIDCO.
If sources are to be believed Two years ago Khan had been offered a seat in the Legislative Council and then in the Rajya Sabha but he declined the offer as he did not want to enter into politics.
