9/6/2010 10:40:14 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sep 6: Recent incessant monsoon rains can be termed as blessing in disguise for the people of Jammu as the state government has decided to take action on the land grabbers in the winter capital of the state.
District Jammu administration has recently sent a notice to 28 people who allegedly built up their homes encroaching land of Nullah in Gangyal area.
It was further held that Nullah has shrunk to the extent that flash floods caused havoc in the areas adjoining it. It was hindering the water to flow smoothly during rains and floods only because of illegal encroachment of the government land.
Though the move is being appreciated but with a reservation by the people as to why this type of action was taken only in Gangyal area when land of many Nullahs of the state particularly in the winter capital have been encroached at various places.
These areas included village Jallo Chak, Ratnu Chak, Shakti Nagar, Bathindi, and Narwal besides other areas.
It is pertinent to mention here that some people of Gangyal area against whom the notice were served has been opposing the notice. They were saying that the only few persons had encroached the land while others had not, they were genuine owners of the land, and authorities were only harassing them.
DC Jammu MK Dwivedi, when contacted, said that these people had illegally grabbed the government land. “We are taking step to vacate the land as the encroachment resulted in disruption in the water flow in the Nullah during heavy rains. Land grabbers would not be spared at any cost”.
He also said that people were also cooperating with the department in vacating the encroachment.
Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla also said that administration is taking action against the illegal construction and land grabbing and DC Jammu have identified similar land in many other locations.
It is pertinent to mention here that many Khads (seasonal ravines) in various parts of the state have been illegally encroached.
