Volleyball: Udhampur boys, Kathua girls emerge winners

JAMMU, Sep 06: Udhampur boys and Kathua girls emerged new champion in the three-day inter-district divisional level under-19 volleyball tournament held under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at Government Higher Secondary School, Akhnoor today.
In the boys’ final, district Udhampur defeated Jammu 3-1 in a neck to neck contest. Losing the opening set 25-27, Udhampur fought back to level the score 1-1 with a close second set win 26-24. It was followed by a sensible play by the visiting side of Udhampur, especially in the crucial stages, to take away next two sets thereby making it a 3-1 win in the best of five summit clash. The score: 25-27, 26-24, 25-18, 25-22.
In the semi-finals, played in the morning session, Jammu beat Ramban 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20) and Udhampur trounced district Samba 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 26-28, 25-15, 15-10). Earlier, in remaining two group matches, Ramban beat Kathua 25-17, 25-09; Udhampur beat Reasi 25-18, 25-16.
Earlier, in the girls’ final, district Kathua defeated their counterparts from Samba 3-2. The title clash turned out to be an entertaining game with crowd enjoyed every smash and drop in the close contest. The score: 28-26, 24-26, 25-12, 21-25, 18-16.
In the final and prize distribution function, Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. He complemented the Department for holding the tournament at Akhnoor thereby giving exposure to the boys and girls from the tehsil.
Prominent among others present were Deputy Director DYSS, SS Bali, Assistant Director, Ashok Kumar, SDM Akhnoor, Ashok Sharma, Principal Boys HSS Akhnoor, Balji Thaploo and Dayal Singh, Principal Girls Higher Secondary Akhnoor.
