JAMMU, Sep 6: For the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, the All Jammu and Kashmir Chess Association (AJKCA) is hosting a national championship in the Winter Capital of the state in the first week of November.
Having the experience of conducting two national open championships on earlier occasions, that too without any financial help from the government side, this time the AJKCA has been allotted the XXI Under-17 (boys and girls) National Chess Tournament by the All India Chess Federation.
“Entrusting faith in the young team of J&K unit, the Federation has this time allotted the Association XXI edition of the National U-17 Chess Tournament in both boys and girls sections. The nine-day event shall be held from November three to November 11 at Heritage School, Sainik Colony,” said president of the Association, Atul Gupta in a press conference held here today.
With the conduct of national events, the Association foresee a bright future for the game in the state. “Such events of national repute help encourage the talent back home, especially those young school goers,” he maintained.
The important aspect of the tournament is the prize money which the host Association has to distribute among the top rankings of both boys and girls. “The tournament has a prize tag of Rs 1.25 lacs to be given away to the first 15 position holders in both boys and girls categories,” informed general secretary of the Association, Baldev Raj.
In all, over 150 players from different states of the country are expected to participate in this tournament. “We expect over 150 entries in both boys and girls sections. In each category, two players from each affiliated state association of the AICF can take part, if any Association fails to send its full quota, the vacancies so caused shall not be filled. However, the host has advantage of extra entries in both the sections,” disclosed the Association president.
