"Irked" by Mangat's utterances, Omar says there will be no change of guard
9/7/2010 12:15:05 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Sept 6: In all "likelihood" irked by Mangat Ram's forceful utterances to have chief minister from Jammu on rotational basis, Omar Abdullah today sought to clear the air about the controversy when he said "there will be no change of guard in the coalition".
A week, or so back, Mangat had told a gathering of party workers at Samba that it would be good for the Congress to have a chief minister from the party on rotational basis.
Though no instant comment had come from Omar on this issue, today, he launched a veiled attack on his detractors, saying he would complete the full term as chief minister.
"I will remain chief minister till 2014," he said repeatedly while addressing gatherings at Budhal near here after inaugurating transmission lines and power stations.
"After 2004, if people again give us mandate, we will renew our coalition bond," he added.
The chief minister also dismissed speculations about the collapse of his government due to the ongoing unrest in the valley.
Without naming PDP, Omar charged the party with constantly hatching conspiracies against his government. "They are not tolerating the fact that they are in opposition," he asserted.
He said that some politicians wanted to topple his government and they were working and creating such environment. "I am strong enough to face them and will defeat their designs," he added.
He said autonomy was also not a final word in addressing the vexed Kashmir problem and if some other proposal was there that suited people, his party would not become hurdle in it.
"Autonomy is NC proposal," he said and added, "We have also proposals from Congress, PDP, BJP and Hurriyat."
Let all these proposals be discussed on table to arrive at a solution which would be acceptable to the people of the state, he suggested.
About the resolution of the issue, Omar said that when his grandfather could not do anything about it, how could he do so in this way? "Let India and Pakistan discuss this issue as I have a little role to play in it," he said, adding his priority instead was to reach out to people and solve their basic problems.
He lauded the people of Jammu division for showing restraint and responsibility during recent law and order situation in the Valley and not falling prey to the propagandist and vested elements. "You have foiled all attempts made to destabilize the communal harmony and brotherhood by exhibiting your political maturity and astute," he said.
The chief minister said equitable development and justice to all sections of the society was the benchmark of his government and from day one, he had tried to give good governance and attend to the day to day problems pertaining to the development of the state. He said in the last 18 months, landmark achievements had been registered in five important sectors of roads and bridges, health, education, water and power supply.
"We want you to judge us for the performance on development front," he said and assured that the coalition government would fulfill its promises made to the people during election campaign. "In fact, certain elements got frustrated by the NC-Congress coalition in the state and were trying to disturb the law and order and tranquility.
Their motive was to divert the attention of the government from the development scenario," he asserted.
He said that his government wanted to revive panchayats and local bodies as early as possible to transfer power to these democratic units. "This would on one hand help to address specific development needs in specific areas and on the other, it would help to curb misappropriation and leakage of funds," he said and asked the people for their larger participation in the elections to these democratic institutions.
Earlier at Barn, the chief minister inaugurated 19.2 km long 132 KV Barn-Siot-Kalakote transmission line constructed at a cost of Rs 6.64 cr. The transmission line would benefit 26 villages in Poonch and Rajouri districts and improve the supply of a power to scores of villages from Barn to Kalakote.
Omar also inaugurated Rs 2 cr Receiving Station and 20 km power transmission line at Budhal. The facility would benefit more than 20 hilly and backward villages of Budhal in Rajouri district.
