Konkan railway engineers strike enters 10th day | Stalemate continues | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 6: The strike called by engineers of Konkan Railways working on Katra-Qazigund rail line project entered 10th day today with no sign of engineers returning to work. Demanding rolling back of advertisement seeking engineers from the entire country for jobs in the Rs 17,000 crore Kashmir valley rail project, association has sought extension for the engaged engineers whose five-year agreement would cease this year. This was stated by Chairman of All Jammu and Kashmir Konkan Railways Consulting Engineers Association Rajpaul Singh. He said that Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has to invite applications from graduate civil engineers of Jammu and Kashmir only, but the Corporation vide advertisement number KR/CO/P/USBRL/02/2010 of August 27 has invited applications from graduate engineers from across the country. “Despite militancy and demanding conditions, we worked with dedication and sincerity. Instead of extending our agreement, KRCL has invited applications on all-India basis,” said Singh “Leave aside extension, no preference has been given to working engineers in the fresh advertisement,” he said while adding that most of the civil engineers have crossed upper age limit. Instead of considering their case sympathetically, KRCL has delivered a deathblow. State is already facing militancy from the last 20 years and youth here faces acute dearth of job avenues. This advertisement of the KRCL has led to harassment of the engineers,” he added. Singh said, “Working engineers have already gone on an indefinite strike from August 28 and, hence, we request the state government and Union government to help us.” Association vice-president Inderjeet Singh said while adding that for the last over a year, KRCL had been giving false assurances of giving extension to working engineers but nothing has been done. On the other hand, 50 drivers of the various contracts carrier for KRCL have also suspended work seeking hike in the monthly amount paid to them. Deputy Chief Engineer (C1) HQ KRCL Reasi L Parkesh said that they are not in a position to take any action on the demand raised by them.
