Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 7: Despite reports of desertions in its ranks and threats of social boycott, J&K police has emerged as a big draw for young job hunters in employment-starved Kashmir. Ignoring calls by hardliners to shun the Khaki force, nearly 60,000 men applied for less than 3,000 jobs in J&K police about 200 applicants for one constable’s post. The applications piled up over the last few months, about the time when the situation in the valley appeared to be spinning out of control with the cops particularly being at the receiving end of public wrath. The department has received 58,975 applications, against 2,785 vacancies across the valley. “The response from (the worst-hit) Srinagar and Budgam districts was even more heartening,” he said. “we’ve received 2,860 applications, against 529 posts in Srinagar district, while 8053 against 283 in Budgam,” he said. Lack of jobs has been a big spur for the protests that brought thousands of young educated men on to the streets. Official estimates of the number of unemployed in the valley stands at 3 lakhs. The department held a recruitment rally in Baramulla district in July and was overwhelmed with the response. “Over 8,000 people turned up for 412 posts despite turmoil in the Baramulla,” where even stone-pelters attended the rally.
According to AIG (Personal) PHQ, Srinagar, the process of filling up of 5268 posts of constables in Police Department is nearing completion while recruitment of 524 Sub Inspectors in various wings of police has been completed in a time bound manner.
The Police Department had advertized 2786 posts of constables in the valley alone for which 58975 applicants participated in the recruitment process. This response evinces the enthusiasm of the aspirant candidates of the valley who want to join the police force.
The AIG further said that 52 compassionate appointments were also made under SRO 43. The department has also promoted 1616 police personnel to various ranks during the current fiscal so far.
Besides 250 posts of ASIs, 700 head constables and 1800 SG constables are also being promoted shortly. He said that 227 SPOs have also been absorbed as constables/followers in the department for their outstanding performance while 137 followers have been converted as constables. State government sources said J&K CM Omar Abdullah, who has called for a proactive approach including the phased revocation of the controversial Armed forces Special Forces Act to deal with street protests, has ordered creation of more police jobs to induct youth form the troubled areas.

Talking to Early Times, Rakesh Singh a Jammu University student said, it speaks double standards of Kashmiri people. On the one hand, they speak of Freedom and on the other hand, they sought govt jobs. I fail to understand what they really want. It is amazing, inspite of unrest in valley, more than 60,000 people applied for 3000 posts in police. Dr.Nirmal Singh, Former BJP president said, this is most amazing thing. It is good to see that large number of people defy separatists dickats and voluntarily applied for the posts in 10 districts of Kashmir. This is a clear message to all those who want to foment more trouble to ordinary Kashmiris. Leading Advocate Sheikh Shakeel, said that this show how much unemployment is in Kashmir valley. The youth of Kashmir have ignored the separatists call for not applying in J&K police. In my view, Govt. should come with more such measures and people will respond positively and hope that present unrest will end.
