Time for Jammu leadership to forget differences and unite

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 7: Thus the situation is critical. There are cogent reasons to believe that if the people Jammu remain dormant and devoid of political activity any more, they would be submerged under the rising tide Kashmiri sub-nationalism, which is based on primitive, intolerant and fundamentally cruel ideology. And if at all it happens, and it will surely happen in case they remain dormant and not nip the evil on time, they themselves will be squarely responsible for what would be done to them by the fanatics in Kashmir. Hence, it is imperative for them to rise above party politics and prepare themselves for a full-scale campaign directed both against Kashmiri separatists and New Delhi, which can do anything to pamper the Kashmiri fanatics.
Similarly, it is imperative for the political leaders of Jammu to forget all differences and form one platform in order to project the Jammu's viewpoint and defeat the ulterior designs of the Kashmiri fundamentalists. It is time for them to act and act decisively and discharge their obligations towards the nation in general and the people of Jammu province in particular. They cannot afford to sit idle and allow the fanatics in Kashmir to enslave the people of Jammu province and the non-Muslim minorities in the state. The fact of the matter is that time is running out very fast and to mark time would be to enable the Kashmiri separatists and communalists to achieve what they have been seeking to achieve since 1947.
Why should the people of Jammu and the Jammu-based political leaders, without any exception, forget their petty differences and unite? They should forget their difference and unite because the bottom-line of all the Kashmiri leaders, without any exception, is secession, based on religious fanaticism. There is no fundamental difference between independence and greater autonomy; there is no fundamental difference between independence and self-rule. Greater autonomy or self-rule is just a very small step short of independence. Once New Delhi grants greater autonomy or self-rule to Jammu and Kashmir it would need a little effort on the part of the Kashmiri separatists and communalists to achieve their ultimate objective - separation from India.
Should the people of Jammu, who have already suffered immense political, economic and social losses during all these years of the state's accession at the hands of the Kashmiri leaders, allow all this to happen? They should not. And, what should they do to avert the impending disaster? They should create in Jammu the 2008-like situation, when they brought the Government of India to their knees and forced the authorities to concede their demands and when the Congress-led government in state had to quit. Such was the pressure from below. They should create a similar situation in Jammu - situation that had made the Kashmiri leaders, without any exception, to hide themselves. It is hardly necessary to elaborate this point, as everyone in Jammu knows that no Kashmiri leader had dared to visit Jammu for months after June 2008 and that no-Jammu-based Congress, National Conference and People's Democratic Party leader had ventured out of their heavily-guarded houses for months together. They were so frightened. They could venture out of their houses only after Jammu won a spectacular victory against the Kashmiri fundamentalists and their handful of supporters in Jammu. The Kashmiri leaders will never forget those days. They are still mortally afraid of the people of Jammu province.
The people of Jammu province are capable of defeating the evil designs of the Kashmiri leaders and their supporters in New Delhi. They showed their might in 1952-53 and forced the Government of India to not only dismiss Sheikh Abdullah from the office of Wazir-e-Azam, but also made it to arrest him and put him behind the bars for years together. They showed their might in 1977 and forced the Sheikh to abandon his autonomy plank and adopt more central laws. They showed their might in 1998 and forced the government of Farooq Abdullah to set up Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and Agricultural University in Jammu. Farooq Abdullah's government would have collapsed like the house of cards collapses had he not conceded the demands of the people of Jammu province.
But these are only three of the several such instances which show that the people of Jammu have the ability and capability to play shots and dictate terms. If they so like, they can do wonders. The existing situation warrants their active intervention. It's question of their very survival. It is hoped they and their leaders would recognize the gravity of the situation and start a relentless campaign both against the Kashmiri secessionists and New Delhi, which appears determined to dilute the Indian sovereignty in Jammu and Kashmir.
