Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 7: It sounds incredible but is true. It is story reflecting whimsical and discriminatory attitude of the state Information Department towards local newspapers. Despite having been approved by Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP), Government of India, Department of Information and Broadcasting two years ago, Daily Dehat Sandesh news paper is a victim of neglect and apathy by State Information Department.
The paper was launched in the year 2004 with weekly publication with RS Gill as its editor. After about four years in the beginning of 2008 the news paper is being brought out as a daily. During the tenure of weekly publication, the paper was not approved by the Information Department.
When Management of the paper sought to know the reason of neglect through Right to Information Act, (RTI), the move resulted in approval for weekly. However, by the time of this approval the publication started on daily basis. Two years on, the Information Department is once again showing attitude of neglect and indifference towards its right of approval, which has long become overdue.
It is important to mention that whenever authorities were asked about the delaying of approval to paper in department, the quick and 'readymade' reply would be "the file is incomplete ......". Even when management offered complete file with all requisite formalities, authorities desisted to accept it for reasons better known to them.
The moot question is that on one side Information . Department vouches for freedom of press and on the other it is this organisation which is antagonizing this by denying the newspapers their due at right time. Editor of the paper being bold and concentrating over the ethics of journalistic cause, publishes truth without fear and favor, which is proving to be his biggest crime in the eyes of authorities. It is this 'crime' for which the paper has become victim of neglect. Despite repeated efforts to contact Director Information, Farooq Renzu for his comments over the matter, he could not be reached.
