‘Differentiate between movement and agitation’
Agitation may be called off after Eid
9/7/2010 11:54:43 PM
Early Times report
Jammu, Sept 7: Contrary to common belief, the on-going bloody agitation may be withdrawn after Eid. Track II players have done their job yet again and government , it is believed, has accepted four of the five demands put forth by Syed Ali Geelani.
Soon after Geelani came out with his five demands , a team from New Delhi led by veteran human rights defender Admiral Ram Dass arrived in Srinagar. They held a protest demonstration to express solidarity with the sufferers. One of the members, Swami even went to the extent of ridiculing the Prime Minister's statement wherein he had stated that Jammu Kashmir was an integral part of India. " There was no need for such a statement at this crucial time. He should have refrained from issuing such a statement." Swami also praised the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his Kashmir initiative. Interestingly most of the separatist leaders hold Vajpayee in high esteem.
The team also met Geelani and discussed the developments in detail. According to reports, New Delhi's willingness to accept four of the five demands was conveyed to him. The only demand that has not been accepted is declaring Jammu Kashmir a disputed territory.
Geelani, reports suggest is adamant and does not want to budge an inch from his stand. But he has limited options. The strike cannot continue till Azadi. It simply is not possible. It has to end sooner than latter. This harsh reality, it seems, has dawned on most of the people who matter in today's Kashmir.
But how can the agitation be called off? The 2008 agitation was called off unexpectedly by the leadership. The decision won Geelani severe criticism. He does not want a repeat of what is now called 2008 mistake.
‘Influential’ people have suggested that the separatists identify "short term" and "long term" goals and accordingly frame a strategy. "Statements like the one issued by Geelani recently cannot do any good to any body", they said. "Geelani has to differentiate between struggle and the on-going agitation. Struggle shall continue but the agitation has to end today or tomorrow", they added.
Geelani issued a statement saying he had set ablaze his boats and there was no going back. He made clear that the on-going agitation would continue till the right to self determination was granted.
Two days ago a delegation from Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference called on Geelani. The delegation, according to reports, had a detailed discussed. While the Mirwaiz Hurriyat has been showing interest in talking to Hurriyat (G), Geelani too has felt the need to take other ‘important’ actors on board.
