A middle path is needed for Kashmir | | | During the last over 75 days' of turmoil in Kashmir,in fact an unprecedented civilian strife in which over 70 people have lost their lives, one thing has become clear that the situation in the valley is so much fragile, tense and delicate that any attempt at initiating either short-cut solution or insist on giving no concession to the people may lead to bigger turmoil. It may cause not only Kashmir but India to bleed.Since the rise of violence in Kashmir after the killing of one youth in police firing in Srinagar on June 11 two ideas keep on rising like tides when the experts try to dish out solutions to the current conflict. While the BJP and its allies want no political package in the shape of autonomy for the people in the Kashmir valley others favour not only autonomy but also other concessions including withdrawal of troops, repeal or dilution of the AFPSA and the release of the detainees.Hence it is a conflict between the two extreme views.Well neither the BJP,that is opposed to the grant of autonomy and repeal of the AFSPA till the situation completely improved, and those who want the centre to dangle carrot policy are wrong. It is so because opponents of harsh measures believe that steps to cultivate people in Kashmir and the separatists could facilitate restoration of peace. The BJP's line of action in based on one analogy. Its leadership is of the view that dilution in the state's integration with India had been the root cause for growth in secessionist politics in Kashmir. It is right when it says that continued policy of appeasement of people in Kashmir and their leaders had fomented regional divide after the Jammuites felt, that too rightly, that they have been given a raw deal in all sphemeres of politial and financial activities.See their share in the civil services. It is quite meagre when compared to the people belonging to the Kashmir valley.See the share the Jammuites get for development projects and activities. It is definitely a trickle when compared to the massive funds available for development activities in the Kashmir valley. Those living in the Kashmir valley have, over the years, come to realise that once they raise bigger noises and shout slogans in favour of azadi more funds and other concessions would flow from Delhi.Hence they have learnt the trick of the trade.Whatever may be their plan one thing has to be taken into consideration.Delhi no longer can afford to initiate tough measures against the angry protesters because they have,by now, learnt that every attempt has to be made to destabilise peace. They look out for opportunitiees when they could paralyse normal living in Kashmir. This is what they have been doing for the last over 70 days. They had felt upset when the valley witnessed breezy peace between Saturday and early Monday. They felt uncomfortable. And they had not to do any major drill. They simply blocked Srinagar-Baramullah road on which senior police officers were to travel. The groups of youth blocked the road and brought the police convoy under heavy stoning. The security forces had no other alternative but to open fire in which four protesters were killed. And Kashmir was again in the midst of turmoil with curfew restrictions being enforced strictly on Tuesday. If thse restrictions were not imposed it ould kick violence and added death.Hence some mild political and financial concessions or packages for the people of the entire state were called for.Whatever concessions the centre planned they should not be limited only to the Kashmir valley but to the other regons of the state,Jammu and Ladakh.Once these packages were finalised people in the valley should be told to stop indulging in violence because "enough is enough" and Kashmir could no longer sustain any violence.(
