PDP defers demonstration plan to allow centre announce packages for Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 9: The PDP leadership deferred its plan of staging dharna and demonstration outside the Parliament House in New Delhi on Thursday in order to prevent any unsavory situation from changing the central Government's plan of announcing some economic and political package for the people of the Kashmir valley. Senior PDP functionaries today said that "we had the plan of staging demonstration outside the Parliament to press for our demand of withdrawal of troops from within the valley, repeal of the AFSPA, release of the detained leaders and end to human rights violations by the security forces." They said in this connection all party legislators, besides senior PDP leaders had been asked to reach Delhi to participate in the proposed demonstration. They said, however, by Wednesday the party leadership decided to defer its plan and accordingly the PDP legislators and other leaders had been told about the change in the programme. One of the leaders said that even the party Chief, Mehbooba Mufti, deferred her plan of holding a press conference in Srinagar on Wednesday. Asked what factors led to the postponement of the demonstration plan a senior PDP leader said "By mid Wednesday we had come to know that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had plans of meeting Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, with the request that if not anything else the centre could order partial repeal of the AFSPA so that some of the areas in the valley and in Jammu were kept out of the ambit of the AFSPA. The PDP leader said that Chief Minister had also demanded some attractive employment package and withdrawal of troops from within some areas in the valley. In order to seek the support of the Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, and the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukerjee, Omar met then in Delhi on Thursday in order to seek their support for partial repeal of the AFSPA. The PDP leadership preferred to adopt a wait and watch policy instead of creating problems for the Prime Minister. Asked if some of the demands of Geelani and those of Omar Abdullah were conceded by the centre will the PDP support the new process for restoration of peace senior PDP leaders said "we will definitely support any move at repealing AFSPA, withdrawal of troops and release of the detainees. We will first examine the quantum of political and economic packages that the centre may dish out for the restoration of peace and if we feel people in the Kashmir valley are satisfied with the concessions we will support the centre." Asked if Omar would take the credit for some financial and political packages that the centre may announce PDP leaders said "it is not the question of taking credit or otherwise." "We have been raking up the issues that now have been raised by Omar Abdullah and as such if the centre conceded some of the demands of the people the PDP will feel that it was able to fulfill its obligations." Reports said that since the situation continued to be fluid in Kashmir the PDP leadership did not want to kick up any hurdle in the process of restoring peace in Kashmir. And hence it opted for patience so that the centre was given a free hand in deciding on the nature of the financial and political packages. |
