BJP High Command at Delhi still soft towards NC leadership

ET REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 9: Though Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held sate wide protests against the reported move of the Union Government against the grant of autonomy or any other concession to the J&K State, the Party High Command has chosen to maintain a wait and watch policy instead of reacting over the issue.
The State BJP held the demonstrations in 41 Assembly segments in J&K out of 87 Assembly constituencies. The demonstrations were held in all 37 Assembly segments of the Jammu region and two Assembly constituencies each in Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region. But at the national level the Party has not taken a serious stand against the reported move of the Government till date.
The BJP High Command instead of openly opposing the State coalition led by the NC leader Omar Abdullah has given a pat to Party leadership after its senior leader LK Advani commended the role of NC president and Union Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah. Not only had this Advani in the same breath criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by accusing it of instigating the stone pelting in Kashmir Valley.
According to sources Mr Advani and other senior leaders of the BJP in Union Capital are so close to NC leadership that they too did not support the change of guard in the state when a demand for the same was made by certain quiaters recently after the state was engulfed by the secessionist violence. The BJP leadership which opposed the sacking of Omar Abdullah said that such a step will not serve any purpose and instead lead to growing alienation of the people in the state, sources added.
However seeing the growing resentment against the coalition Government in the State especially for its failure to contain the law and order situation in the Valley where the situation has taken worst turn than 1989-90 conditions, the State BJP was in a quandary to take a tough stance against the coalition Government, sources said, adding the Party leadership later took the issue with the High Command and apprised it of the public resentment against the coalition. The State leadership while explaining its position to the Party High Command made it clear to them that maintaining silence over the issue will prove counterproductive and suicidal for the Party and it will give undue benefit to its detractors in Jammu region where from the Party has won 11 Assembly seats in last Assembly elections.
Not only this the BJP leadership had also apprised the High Command that its Continued silence on the happenings in Kashmir will also erode its mass base of the Party in Jammu region, sources said, adding the Party High Command however authorised the State leadership to take the decision as they like best. However the Party leadership at National level has till date maintained the silence over the issue and not taken the UPA head on in this regard.
Sources said the BJP which is the main opposition at the Centre and has been advocating abrogation of Article 370 can no longer look as a mute spectator to Centre's move of granting more concessions to J&K and it case the Party also toes the Congress line on this issue it will not only lose the claim of being a party with difference but also there will be no takers for its demand on abrogation of Article 370 giving special Constitutional position to J&K in future.
This being a serious issue has also perturbed the Party High Command and they are in a fix whether to support the proposed move or oppose it. It may be recalled that the Bharatiya Jana Sangh which was rechristened as BJP in 1980 had taken a lead in 1953 Praja Parishad agitation in Jammu to break the permit system after the founder president of the Party, Dr Samaprasad Mookerjee crossed the Lakhanpur bridge without the permit. He was arrested and taken to Srinagar jail where he died in mysterious circumstances. Besides Dr Mookerjee a large number of Praja Parishad volunteers sacrificed their lives in this movement in the state which stood for total integration of J&K with rest of India.
But softening stand on this issue and making political compromises with NC afterwards has shown some dilution in the ideology of the BJP over the years. The sources said appreciating the role of NC patriarch by Mr Advani and opposing the PDP is also based on the same formula. Otherwise it was NDA led by Atal Behari Vajpayee which provided all logistic support to formation of PDP in the state to break the monopoly of NC and create a political alternative in the Valley.
