| Four-day workshop on 'Bioinformatics' culminates | | | Early Times Report KATRA, Sep 10: Four-day workshop on "Bioinformatics: Converting Data to Knowledgebase" organized jointly by School of Biotechnology of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) and School of Biotechnology of University of Jammu culminated here today. The workshop had begun on September 6 and ended on September 9. Workshop was held in two phases with the inaugural ceremony and the first two days sessions at the University of Jammu and culminated today after two days lectures and hands-on training of the delegates at School of Biotechnology, of the university followed by valedictory function at the picturesque campus of SMVDU, Katra. Resource persons for two day- second phase sessions of the workshop at SMVDU were Dr Balwinder Singh, Scientist, Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, Dr. Shaliendra Gupta, Scientist, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow and Parvez Slathia, Lecturer, SMVDU, Katra. Hands-on training to familiarize the participants with the use of basic bioinformatics tools and softwares followed lectures. VC SMVDU Prof R.N.K.Bamzaei was chief guest for valedictory function, congratulated both Universities for their collaborative effort and expressed the need of further strengthening of the ties among the institutes of the region in research and development. He also elaborated on how bioinformatics, which started as a tool in biotechnology research, has now developed into a separate field of research. He stressed the young researchers to take up the challenges in order to fill the present day lacunae in the field of bioinformatics. Earlier, Coordinator, Bioinformatics Centre and Director, School of Biotechnology, JU Prof. M.K.Dhar in his address highlighted the main aim of organizing such workshops. Coordinator, Bioinformatics Centre, Dean and Director, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU Dr. V.Verma presented the valedictory address and paid his gratitude to the two universities and the Department of Biotechnology, GOI for their support in these endeavors. P.S.Slathia, presented vote of thanks while Subreta Manhas, student of B.Tech (IBT) SMVDU, Katra, conducted proceedings. |
