Over new mother's "negligence" death, relatives beat up docs, nurses; smash hospital furniture | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 10: After the death of the mother of one-day-old baby in Poonch district hospital late Thursday night due to the alleged negligence of doctors, angry relatives beat up hospital staff, including doctors, and smashed furniture. Astonishingly, no FIR had been registered by police till late tonight either against doctors, or the deceased's relatives. Noorina Akhtar of Chaktro in Mandi, Poonch, delivered a baby in the Poonch district hospital about two days back. She developed pain in her stomach Thursday at about 11.30 pm. Police sources said when her husband Imitiaz Ahmad approached Dr Shehnaz Bhatti, a gyane-cologist, and apprised her of his wife's problem, she said it was not her case and suggested him to approach Dr Rakesh Verma. Sources said Dr Shehnaz later herself called up Dr Verma and asked him to come soon to the hospital. It took Dr Verma few minutes to reach the hospital after the emergency call. In the meantime, Shehnaz also arrived there, the sources added. However, before the doctors could check the lady, she died. This infuriated her relatives, who went berserk, beating up doctors, para-medicos and peons. They also broke glass panes, beds and other items of hospital furniture that came their way. They alleged that Noorina could have been saved had the doctors attended on her on time. She died because of the doctors' negligence, they alleged. Police also reached the hospital after the matter was brought to their notice by some hospital staffers. Without being affected by the police presence, the angry people continued their violent demonstration, refusing to leave the premises till the erring doctors were not held and booked under law. To defuse the situation, police detained Dr Verma and took him to the Poonch police station. Noorina's relatives also left the hospital after Dr Verma's detention and took her body home. Sources said when police today approached them at Chaktro, they said they were not interested in registering any case against the doctors. "If we register a case against doctors, that will not bring Noorina back to them," they told police. The hospital authorities had also not filed any complaint against the deceased's husband and relatives, the sources added. Sources said police did not register a case in the incident because none of the parties had approached them. Dr Verma was also freed this afternoon, the sources added.
17 mourners hurt as roof caves-in JAMMU: At least 17 people, who had gone to Chaktro in Mandi, Poonch, to mourn the demise of Noorina Akhtar, were today wounded after the roof of a kacha house, on which they were sitting, caved-in. The fragile roof gave way under their weight and they fell through it approximately 12 ft onto the floor, police sources said. At least 14 of them were admitted to the Poonch district hospital for the treatment of their injuries. Noorina was later buried in the village graveyard.
