Omar becomes ‘Curfew tycoon’ of Kashmir | Another feather in CM's cap | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 10 : Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has added yet another feather to his cap. He has the distinction of surpassing the record of former Chief Minister, Late Ghulam Muhammad Shah who had won notoriety for paralyzing life in Srinagar by imposing curfew for more than forty five consecutive days in 1984 after dethroning Dr Farooq Abdullah. But the incumbent Chief Minister completed 61 days of curfew today and thus became what some people call "Curfew tycoon" of the state. Shah knew where to strike in Srinagar to `enable him to serve the people better'. Parts of Down Town including Khankah-e-Moula, Bohri Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, parts of Nawa Kadal were considered bastions of National Conference. According to a retired school teacher, Abdul Kabeer of Nawa Kadal, Shah placed these areas under curfew for more than forty five days. "When the curfew was finally lifted, the people did not dare to create trouble. Yes, a handful of National Conference workers chanted slogans and that was it", he said. He said a National Conference leader, now a minister in Omar Abdullah government set ablaze the Nawa Kadal bridge. "An FIR stands registered against him in the concerned police station", said Kabeer. Late Shah's worker while hailing his leader said: "Shah Sahib has been cursed and criticized for placing Srinagar under curfew but nobody got killed during the curfew days. But in this regime around seventy people have been killed till date", he said. A new era commenced in 1990. Jag Mohan was appointed governor and Dr Farooq resigned in protest. Jag Mohan had to impose curfew to keep the people indoors. But he would relax the curfew alternately if not daily. Then came a time when day curfew was totally lifted. The restrictions were imposed only at night. But Omar Abdullah has created history. Since June 11, the Valley has witnessed more than sixty days of continuous curfew. Omar also has the distinction of inventing a new type of curfew. It is called "restrictions" by the officials and un-declared curfew by the gullible people. |
