Centre may review its 'Eid package'
Fresh flare up in Srinagar
9/12/2010 11:24:50 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Sept 12: At a time when people in Kashmir valley were awaiting much hyped and much awaited 'Eid package' to douse the flames of unrest, some important buildings in the heart of Srinagar including the office of the Power development commissioner, Chief Engineer (Electrical ), Crime Branch office were set ablaze and several others came under attack immediately after protest march led by moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Omar Farooq from Eidgah to Lal Chowk dispersed after offering Eid prayers on Saturday.
The iconic clock tower in the middle of the Lal Chowk was also damaged and police gypsy and a police barrack outside Hazratbal shrine was set on fire.Eid festival also witnessed incidents of stone pelting in Sopore, Palhan, Pattan, Pahalgam and Awantipora in Kashmir valley.
Condemning the fresh violence state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, camping in New Delhi directly pointed fingers towards Mirwaiz Omar Farooq as he failed to keep his promise of taking a peaceful protest march to Lal chowk after eid prayers.
Lashing out at the Umar Farooq, Omar Abdullah on a private TV channel said, before seeking permission to carryout a peaceful march from Eidgah to Lal Chowk if Umar Farooq was not aware of the composition of the crowd he should have not taken out a march and should have dispersed after offering Eid prayers.
CM Omar said Umar Farooq incited the crowd and is to be blamed for the same.
Responding to the allegations moderate Hurriyat Leader Umar Farooq also clarified that after taking out the march from Eidgah to Lal howk when the people were dispersing few miscreants set the government buildings on fire.
Hurriyat leader also rubbished the allegations that separatist leaders incited the violence and triggered the protests that were followed by incidents of arson. The government contended that it allowed easy movement of people in view of the Eid celebrations but still the violence erupted and several buildings were torched. The government also contended that the day would go down in the history as a remarkable day when police force despite extreme provocation exercised maximum restraint and no person was injured despite widespread violence.
The contention of government in adopting restraint was also aimed at dismissing the allegations often leveled that it doesn't allow peaceful processions.
More importantly, the Chief Minister , apparently raising fingers towards Mirwaiz, made this point repeatedly that the turn of events have proved that despite giving a word those who took out the march failed to keep their words.
In the backdrop of Eid protests, the fresh flare up of violence in parts of Srinagar would surely cast a shadow on the ongoing talks between the centre and the state to relax provisions of AFSPA and give some concessions to ease out the situation in the coming days. Observers have it to say that Centre may take time to review the package that was anvil for the people of Kashmir aimed at pacifying the anger of protesting youth.
